This portion of the web page provides some tips and hints on how to get a character for the New Republic. These are meant as guidelines and advice on how best to get a character up and running; one's mileage on character creation may, of course, vary.
First Things First... Create Your Character
In order to play a character for the New Republic on Star Wars MUSH, you must of course get a character created. Much useful information on character creation can be found at the main Star Wars MUSH web page, and interested parties are strongly urged to explore the web page for general help on the MUSH.
Developing Your Character
The New Republic strongly encourages new players to take a bit of time to think about their character concepts before trying to roleplay. This will help immensely in trying to figure out how your character would fit into our faction. If you are finding yourself stumped for ways to make your character live and breathe, consider the following background points:
Your Character's Name
Your name is arguably the single most important part of your character, as it is the first thing everyone on the game will see when interacting with you. We encourage new players to choose names which are in character for the Star Wars universe and also in character for their character's established species and culture.
For example, if you are a human, we know from the movies that English-sounding names (such as Luke and Ben and Owen) are perfectly in character for humans in the Star Wars universe. We recommend, however, that you try to think of something that sounds a little unusual, perhaps a variant of an English name, to avoid five Johns or sixteen Susans in our player database. :) Note that most of the names of human characters in the movies are not obviously lifted from the English language: e.g., Han, Leia, Lando, Beru, Bail, Wedge, etc.
Note also that a common naming convention on Star Wars MUSH is for characters with short names to use their full name as their character name, with an underscore serving as the space between the first name and last name. For example, the character Han Solo is named Han_Solo in our database. (The reason this is done is because the MUSH server cannot easily handle spaces in character names.) It is not required that you name your character in this fashion, though if you have a common-sounding first name that others might easily use too, you might want to name yourself with the underscore and your last name, too, to differentiate yourself from other characters who have the same first name you do.
If you are a human character, you can probably easily get away with using your real name as your character name. However, if you are a non-human character we strongly recommend against this as it is far less likely that (say) a Wookiee or a Sullustan or a Rodian would have a human-sounding name.
Your Character's Species
This is a quite important part of your character, not only for the obvious reasons that it will affect such basic things as what you look like and your physical skills, but also because it may significantly affect what is plausible for your character's history. Please be aware that several species which exist in the Star Wars universe are restricted on our MUSH; if there is a particular species you would like to play, and it isn't an obvious choice in the process of character generation, you should consult one of the game administrators for help.
Your Character's Culture
Your character's culture will be strongly affected, of course, by what species of character you are playing. Some things will be easily taken for granted; for example, you can safely assume you are at least passingly familiar with the Star Wars universe's spacefaring, galaxy-spanning culture. However, filling in the particulars of your character's culture can add spice and interest. You might think about such things as the technology level of your homeworld, its political climate, its known economy -- or did you have a homeworld at all? Perhaps you were born a spacefaring wanderer.
